Defending Champion Harry
Carpenter returns looking to go back to back. With the two
other podium finishers from last year Campbell Flakemore and
Oscar Stevenson having stepped up to the elite ranks and not
racing the battle for the podium spots is open.
The Route
Two laps of the same route the women cover.
Starting out in Helidon along Ditchmans road before turning on
to Sandy Creek road after five and a half kilometres. The
Sandy Creek road section could prove crucial with three climbs
in quick succession. While the climbs are not long they will
disrupt the rhythm. The first tops out after 7.3km, with the
second at 10.12km also the turning point before going over the
first in the opposite direction heading back to Ditchmans road
after 14km. Then riders travel two kilometres further before
turning and heading back towards Helidon. The final eight
kilometres are almost completely straight but slightly uphill
and will test the legs if people went out too hard.
The Contenders
Start list available
here
Harry Carpenter
The defending champion was seventh in 2013 before storming to
the win last year by 30 seconds over the man who would become
Under 23 World Champion Campbell Flakemore. Carpenter is back
to defend after finishing on the podium at the National
Championships. Very strong against the clock, Carpenter will
be looking to take the win and hopefully secure a spot at the
World Championships in September.
Daniel Fitter
Junior team pursuit World Champion last year steps up to the
elite ranks for the first time. Claimed the Oceania individual
pursuit on the track in October last year. This will be a
different test and he has just come off Track National
Championships.
Tom Kaesler
2013 Junior Oceania Champion in the time trial, Kaesler was
sixth at the Australian National Championships. Finished 1min
30secs behind winner Scotson but just 19 seconds down on Harry
Carpenter and the second fastest of those racing here. The
course should suit him and is a contender for the win. Seventh
last year.
Angus Lyons
A first year under 23 who finished third in the junior ranks
last year. Eighth at the Australian Championships tin January
and also finished 12th in the road race.
Fraser Gough
2014 Under 23 New Zealand time trial champion before finishing
third this year. As the only rider from New Zealand in the
field, will be looking to post a strong result.
Other names to watch: Ayden Toovey, Joshua Harrison and David
Edwards. |
