The 28th of February will go down as one of the days of Sam Welsford life with the Australian track sensation claiming team pursuit and scratch race world titles within the space of an hour at the 2019 UCI Track World Championships in Pruszkow, Poland.

After claiming the team pursuit world title smashing the world record by nearly two seconds, there was little time for Welsford to take it in as he was quickly back on the track in the scratch race.

With the pace high throughout the 15 kilometre race Welsford elected to conserve energy and recover from his heroic team pursuit ride. With attacks continually chased down the plan was working well for Welsford before Portugal's Rui Oliveira stole a late march with around six laps to go. Quickly taking half a lap on the field it looked to suddenly be a race for silver.

Undeterred and with the pace still high Welsford took his chase with just over a lap to go unleashing the power that lead Australia to the team sprint title to chase down the fading Portuguese rider and overhaul him the final metres. Such was Welsford's speed he left the rest of the field in his wake with time to celebrate across the line.
