  Successful Thuringen-Rundfahrt For Jayco-AIS
  June 16th 2013
The Australian U23 National Team (Jayco-AIS World Tour Academy) continued their winning ways at the Internationale Thüringen-Rundfahrt in Germany. The team started the race with Damien Howson wearing number one thanks to the overall win of Rohan Dennis (now Garmin-Sharp) last year.

The eight day race started with a 4.1km prologue with Howson winning by one second over Olympic Omnium Champion Lasse Norman Hansen. The win saw Howson take the first yellow jersey of the race. Howson wore the jersey for the next three days before losing it on stage three.

The next win for the team came on stage four with Caleb Ewan taking his third European win of the year in a convincing bunch sprint.

Heading in to the stage five time trial the team was looking for another good result. Campbell Flakemore posted an earlier time and as the remaining riders came in nobody went faster. The closest anyone came was teammate Damien Howson who finished 16 seconds back in second.

The win was Flakemore’s second European TT win of the year after winning the stage five TT at Royal Smilde Olympia's Tour in May. Howson’s second place also moved him back up to third overall. Adam Phelan made it a third rider in the top 10 finishing 6th and moving himself up to fourth overall

On the final day of racing two riders were still away inside the final 10 kilometers and the team came to the front to bring it back together. The plan worked with the race back together inside the final two kilometers. Caleb Ewan out sprinted the bunch to take the win. Ewan’s two wins and several other top 10 placings also earned him the points jersey.

Dylan van Baarle (Rabobank Development Team) took the overall race win.

The young Australian team walk away from the eight day race with four stage wins, third and fourth overall as well as the points jersey.
