Trofeo Alfredo Binda - Comune di Cittiglio Preview

The second round of the Women's World Cup brings the peloton to Italy for Trofeo Alfredo Binda-Comune di Cittiglio. The race was first held on 1974 and has been a round of the World Cup since 2008. Where Ronde van Drenthe was a sprinter friendly course Trofeo Alfredo Binda is anything but.

A broken collarbone forces defending Champion Emma Johansson to miss the race. Last year Emma Johansson outsmarted Lizzie Armitstead to take the win from a select group of eight riders that distanced some of the stronger sprinters. Giorgia Bronzini won the sprint for ninth from a select chase group 49 seconds behind.

With three time winner Marianne Vos also missing the race recovering from injury as she focuses on qualifying for and winning Olympic gold in the dirt in 2016 only one former winner will start. Elisa Longo Borghini the 2013 winner will look to make it two in a row for Wiggle Honda after Jolien D'hoore claimed the opening World Cup round Ronde van Drenthe earlier in March.

The Route

The race starts in Laveno Mombello and after 17.6km reaches the row of Cittiglio. From here the peloton rides a large 37.7km loop. The intermediate sprints come at 23.2km and 30.4km. The second sprint point marks the end of the mostly flat roads for the day. The road starts to climb immediately after the second sprint with the first GPM point coming at 34.4km. From here the large loop undulates for the next 10km before an 8km downhill run back in to Cittiglio.

From here riders face four laps of a hard 17.1km finishing circuit. The main feature of the finishing circuit is the Orino climb just over 9km in to the lap. Over the top of the climb there is a 7.6km mostly downhill run in to the finish. The final 400m are uphill making it one for the stronger riders.
